What was in Starsky’s mouth?

In Targets without a Badge Part 1, Starsky & Hutch are on a stakeout watching for drug runners who are bringing cocaine from Las Vegas to Bay City. After being stuck in the Torino for five hours with nothing to do but read magazines and play card tricks, both guys are bored out of their minds.

The scene includes lots of delightful banter between them (something that was sorely lacking in most of Season 4), and throughout the scene, Starsky is chomping down on a pink toothbrush, as you can see here.

Now, the question is…what had previously been in Starsky’s mouth that he needed to brush his teeth?

Take the quiz:

A) A chili dog laden with garlic and onions

B) Glue from licking envelopes

C) Hutch

Correct answer: Hutch

Did you answer correctly? No? If you guessed A or B, here’s why you’d be wrong:

Where would Starsky have gotten a chili dog laden with garlic and onions in the middle of the desert? While Starsky DID have something resembling a hot dog in his mouth, clearly this answer is incorrect.

Why would Starsky be licking envelopes and to whom would they have been addressed? While Starsky WAS licking something during the stakeout, and that something produced a sticky substance, it wasn’t envelope glue, so clearly this answer is incorrect.

Bonus question:

Just exactly WHICH part of Hutch was in Starsky’s mouth? Extra credit for describing it in detail, including length, girth, and amount of saltiness. Good luck!

  1. After a very rough few days, you have made me laugh! You have convinced me that your answer is the only correct one. But here’s another question–why did Starsky have the toothbrush? Did he come prepared knowing what was going to happen?

Let me know what you think
