Fic Recs

I decided to list my favorite fics written by other writers (and some fan favorite fics that I haven’t had time to read yet but are highly recommended) and will be adding to the list as I go. To read my fics, head over to the “Daisy’s Fanfic” page. All fics listed below are slash except where specified as gen. Note: as there have been literally thousands of S&H stories written over the past 40 years, and some are no longer (or have never been) online, this list is nowhere near complete.

Angsty/Dark fics

This category includes breakup fics, separation fics, partner betrayal, missing partner, rapefic, torture, drug addiction, serious illness or injury, etc. Some deathfics, too. Most of the stories do NOT have happy endings, but for the ones that do, the path to getting there is fraught and tense.

Any Day Now (gen) by Rebelcat – A short fic where Starsky is raped and ends up punching Hutch. This story won 2nd Place at the 2007 Torino Awards for Starsky Hurt/Comfort Story and Extreme Story.

Blood on the Sun by kassidy – one of the darkest fics in the fandom but so, so good.

Distant Shores by April Valentine – a classic h/c longfic (over 200,000 words), it’s a love story where Hutch goes missing for 2 years shortly after the events of Sweet Revenge and Starsky never gives up trying to find him. Originally published in 1991 in zine form, the author did six years of research.

Hello, Darkness by Verlaine – Hutch is kidnapped and tortured.

Not With a Bang by jat sapphire – a heartbreaking post Sweet Revenge story that does NOT have a happy ending. It’s as traumatic (or more) as a deathfic, so you might want to have tissues handy. It’s also one of the most beautiful and exquisitely written fanfics I’ve ever read, and it will probably haunt me forever.

Only a Change of Worlds by Nikki Harrington – originally published in Dangerous Lives, Dangerous Visions. One of my favorite stories because the relationship between the guys in this story is so intense and so them.

Sweet Revenge by Suz tm – my first reaction to reading this fic was “omg omg omg” followed by…well, I won’t say, because I don’t want to spoil it.

The Thousandth Man (gen) by Suzan Lovett. This story takes place immediately after the events of Starsky vs Hutch and is soooo angsty, a really slow burn. Note: I was inspired to write my poem One Thousand and One Ways (gen) after reading this story.

Under the Bridge by Verlaine – a post Sweet Revenge story set several years after canon, concerning Gunther’s parole hearing. This story does NOT have a happy ending, so read at your own risk if you think you can handle it. It still haunts me.

Angsty but not dark

The fics listed here have lots of angst but also happy endings.

A Slice of Comfort (gen) by K. Hanna Korossy – a little angst and a whole lot of hurt/comfort when Hutch rescues Starsky after he’s been tortured by bad guys

Blindsided (gen) by K. Hanna Korossy – when an accident threatens to change Hutch’s life forever, Starsky is there to support him

Cliffhanger by Rae – it’s a nail-biter until it isn’t, and then it’s so much more

Company in the Darkness (gen) by K. Hanna Korossy – when an explosion blinds and deafens Starsky, Hutch is his only anchor. My favorite hurt/comfort story, it is awesome.

If Not Now, When? by AstridCaine – a story that was born out of the nearly inconceivable concept of, ‘What would it take for Starsky & Hutch to leave each other behind, not for a year, or five years, but for decades?’

Lost (gen) by K. Hanna Korossy – when Starsky is beaten and his girlfriend is murdered in front of him, Hutch is there for him as Starsky retreats inside himself.

Searching the Darkness for Stars by Dawnwind – Starsky & Hutch can see each other despite the darkness that surrounds them both literally and metaphorically. Inspired in part by an unfilmed S&H script

Stuck on You by Dawnwind – lots of comfort and love after Starsky suffers a grievous injury

AU’s (alternate universe)

AUs are fanfiction stories that place Starsky and Hutch in a time, place, or situation that deviates from canon. They can be angsty, dark, sweet, romantic, tragic, humorous, smutty, or whatever.

A Gaslight Friendship by Dale Gardener – a first time fic set in 1840 Victorian England where Hutch is a doctor and Starsky is an actor.

Pigs in Space by molo (esteefee) – a hilarious sci-fi satire set in the future where Starsky & Hutch are cops in outer space, and Hutch has a big secret he’s been keeping from Starsky.

Turing Test (gen) by kuonji – this sci-fi AU is Pigs in Space’s evil twin. Starsky & Hutch are cops in a dystopian world in a story that’s bleak, cruel, and extremely dark. If you love darkfics but normally only read slash, read this one anyway. The non-slash doesn’t matter one bit to the devastation this story wreaks.

Zebra 3 Teas by Rosa Himmelblau – a sweet coffee shop AU where Starsky is a barista and Hutch is his customer.

Christmas/Hanukkah/New Year’s

‘Tis the season, so I decided to add some of my favorite winter holiday fics.

After Christmas Special by LibraThree – an addendum to Little Girl Lost.

Ball Drop by hardboiledbaby – a short and adorably fluffy New Year’s Eve story

Hutch Versus the Rat King by garrideb – set in the aftermath of Vendetta, in which Hutch’s burned hand gets infected and he falls into a fever dream involving the Nutcracker. Originally posted in the 2017 S&H Advent Calendar.

Merry, Merry by Verlaine (gen) – it doesn’t matter that this isn’t a slash story, because it feels like it is. It’s a post-Sweet Revenge Christmas story told from the POV of Merl the Earl which is poignant, moving, and painful, but it’s also bursting full of love and hope.

Merry and Bright by Verlaine (gen) – a sequel to Merry, Merry in which S&H are offered a promising opportunity and learn the valuable lesson that life goes on.

Take What You Can Get by babs – it’s Christmas and Starsky & Hutch need a miracle.

Drabbles

A drabble is a work of fiction that is exactly 100 words. A double drabble is exactly 200 words, etc. Drabbles may be angsty, romantic, fluffy, sexy, deathfics, etc.

Darkness by Susan – One of the best S&H drabbles I’ve come across, this is 100 words of devastating perfection. Grab your tissues.

Mercy by Britwizz – And this is one of the other best S&H drabbles. It is intense.

Deathfics

A deathfic is a fanfic where one or more major character dies (that would be either Starsky, Hutch, or both). Note: Some deathfics might be listed under other categories in order to avoid spoilers. Basically, if the author includes a deathfic tag, then I listed it here under Deathfics, but if the author doesn’t include the tag, then I listed it under a different category.

Cold Hands, Warm Heart (gen) by Dale Gardener – sweet but spooky at the same time.

Crab Sandwiches by Dawnwind – a longfic and the biggest tearjerker of them all. Make sure to invest in tissues before you read this one.

Heart Failure by Callisto – short but packs a hell of a wallop. The last line is a killer.

Home Through the Night (gen) by Brit – very, very sad and heartbreaking.

Inevitabilis by Audrey – a slow burn and really, really sad.

The 365th Day by Ioannia – a heartbreaking story of love and loss and…I’ll stop here because I don’t want to give away too much

The Whisper in My Ear by Rivanna Michaels – Hutch dies in a car accident outside Starsky’s apartment and Starsky blames himself. If you’re looking for the dripping faucet story, this is it.

Time to Go by Rae – this is an older guys fic that’s haunting and poignant.

Fluffy Fics

Fluff is fanfic without angst; any pleasant, feel-good story. Fluff may or may not lack plot, but the focus of the story is on displays of affection between two or more characters rather than on sex.

Blame it on the Rum by Keri T – Hutch has a little too much to drink on New Year’s Eve.

Gadgets by Verlaine – one of the sweetest, loveliest, and real older guys stories I’ve read.

The stars above were bright and new (I pulled them down for you) by SquaresAreNotCircles – Starsky tells Hutch he wants to marry him

Funny/Humorous/Crack

Joy Ride (gen) by kuonji – Starsky’s Torino takes a ride. This fic is pure crack. Nominated for a Torino Award in 2009, category “Humor Story” and for an Ollie Award in 2010, category “Big Eyes Award (Best crack story)”.

Officer Down by Rebelcat – Starsky sustains an embarrassing injury which is made worse by Hutch’s reaction. First place winner of the 3rd Annual “Make Hutch Hurl” contest. Warning — don’t read this story on a full stomach.

Romance

Stories with all the feels.

An Answer for Another Day by kuonji – this story is angsty, sweet and romantic

Caught Lightning by molo (esteefee) – this beautifully-written story has romance, angst, hurt/comfort, and a happy ending.

Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) by molo (esteefee) – This Hutch hurt/comfort story is hot as hell, but it’s also romantic and has all the feels.

Diet and Exercise by Nik (Britwizz)

Four Times Starsky Waited for Hutch, And One Time He Didn’t by Callisto – a sweet, wistful and romantic pre-slash story

Insomnia by Nyssa

The Death of the Six-Week Rule by Valentin – sometimes things are easier to see when you’re blind.

Vanilla Dreams by Scioscribe

Your One and Only by gideonbd – this story is so lovely and sad and romantic and the love between Starsky & Hutch is palpable and I’m getting a lump in my throat just thinking about this story

Sexy/Hot/Smutty

Achilles’ Heel by molo (esteefee) – any description I might write would not do this story justice. You just gotta read it for yourself.

Five Times Starsky and Hutch Kissed in the Torino (Well, Technically Four) by molo (esteefee)

Number One by Keri T – the guys get it on after the events of The Pilot and the results are hotter than the chili Starsky wanted to have for dinner.

Sexperts by Charlotte Frost – During a long stakeout, Starsky quizzes Hutch on his sexual knowledge and things heat up quickly. This first time fic is so hot you might need a cold shower after reading it.

Uncategorized/Other

I included fics here that either don’t fit into one of the above categories, or they qualify in more than one category and I didn’t want to make a decision, or they do fit into one of the categories above, but I didn’t want to give spoilers.

And Always Shall Be… (gen) by Flamingo – older Starsky and Hutch see a thought-provoking movie. Podfic read by Flamingo also available. This story gave me chills and made me cry. It’s not sad, or dark, or tragic; just really poignant and moving.

Only the One You Love by Jojo – I wasn’t sure which category to put this under. It’s a bit angsty, a bit romantic, a bit fluffy. This short pre-slash fic is one of my favorite stories ever. It’s just so lovely and hopeful.

Pat the Bunny by Rae – this sweet short story has hurt/comfort, romance, fluff, and a little angst

The Ground Beneath Our Feet by gideonbd – possibly the most beautifully-written, heartbreaking story I have ever read (and not just fanfiction story, but ANY story)

The Important Things by Dale Gardener – short and so very poignant

The Quiet by Gayeld – short and profound

Til the Sun Breaks Down by Rae – an alternate reality based on Sweet Revenge, it will break your heart
